Elevator floor mat renewal

A worn or torn elevator floor mat shows immediately, collects dirt and can be a safety risk.

Hissi-Design Finland Oy renews elevator floor mats on a turnkey basis in Southern Finland: measurement, removal of the old covering, installation of the new material and responsible recycling of the old one. When is it worth renewing the floor mat?

An elevator floor is under constant wear, and the mat is often the first part to look worn. Renewal is worthwhile when:

  • the floor mat is worn, cracked or detached at the edges
  • dirt has built up that can no longer be cleaned off
  • the floor feels slippery or uneven
  • the elevator’s look needs updating, for example alongside other modernisation

A worn mat can be a safety risk

An elevator floor mat is not just a question of looks. A badly damaged mat — for example one that has curled up at the edges — can cause a trip or damage the elevator’s door mechanism. If the damage poses an immediate danger to users, the elevator must be taken out of use until the mat has been repaired or removed.

The elevator owner’s responsibility. Elevator safety is governed by the Finnish Lift Safety Act (1134/2016). Under Section 62 of the Act, if an inspection finds that using the elevator poses an immediate danger, the inspector orders use to stop and the elevator to be disconnected from the power supply — and may do so themselves if necessary. Renewing a worn mat in time is both a safety and a liability matter for the housing company and property manager.

How the work proceeds

  2. Send a quote request with the form. Attach a photo of the elevator to get your quote faster.
  3. We confirm the quote, usually within the same business day.
  4. We agree on an installation time.
  5. Installation: removal of the old covering, levelling of the floor if needed, installation of the new mat with adhesive.
  6. The old material is hauled away and recycled responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

How much does elevator floor mat renewal cost?

The price is determined by the floor area of the elevator car. You get an indicative estimate from the calculator below. The final price is confirmed in the quote. Travel costs of €1/km based on the site location are added (for trips over 1 h, €55/h).

How long is the elevator out of use?

The work is usually completed within one working day, often faster. The elevator is back in use as soon as the adhesive and silicone have dried. In special cases (e.g. residents with reduced mobility or elderly residents) the elevator can, by prior arrangement, be taken briefly into use during the work. We do not recommend this, as it interrupts the work and delays completion.

Is a separate person needed to stop the elevator?

No. We hold the necessary lift work permits, so we handle stopping the elevator ourselves — the housing company does not need to arrange a separate supervisor.

What if the plywood under the floor comes loose?

In newer elevators there is often plywood under the floor, which may partly come loose when the old covering is removed. In that case the floor is levelled before the new material is installed. Levelling €55/h + any material costs.
